Sensory impairment refers to when one of our senses; sight, hearing, touch, smell, balance, is no longer functioning as normal. People with learning disabilities and ASC often have some kind of sensory impairment e.g. an individual may be under-sensitive to touch and so might display self-injurious behaviour to make up for the loss of stimulation in this area. Individuals may also be hyper-sensitive e.g. to noise and so might spend a lot of time covering their ears. Sensory activities can be useful for helping individuals with a sensory impairment to remain stimulated in appropriate ways.
